Success comes from a thousand little moments.
The first day butterflies, the first exciting lecture, the first supportive tutor. Hear some of the unique moments that have been part of our student’s first Massey experience.
Meet five inspiring students
Meet Rebecca, James, Ashley, Maddison and Amandine. Five very different Massey students with very different challenges and experiences.
Ashley
A boxing coach, a student and a mum — Ashley makes the juggle work with the flexibility of studying online. Ashley has a passion for sport and exercise and hopes to help others through this realm.
“My kids come home and see me studying. They know that their mum has dreams that require a lot of patience and hard work. I hope to inspire my kids never to give up on their passions.”
Maddison
Her first year studying film has been the best experience of her life. But Maddison admits that she had fears going into a university environment.
“I wrestled with anxiety growing up, so I set myself a goal for that first semester. If I can turn up to every lecture, maybe I can do it. I had a lot of support from teachers. If I could talk to my 22-year-old self, I would say ‘you’ve got this’.”
James
Combining competitive snowboarding with a computer science degree might sound like an impossible task. But studying online lets James live his best life.
“I was snowboarding for New Zealand and thinking about uni. The idea that I could be remote and be near the mountains made it all possible. During the ski season, I could move to Ruapehu or Wanaka. During the summer, I could compete in Europe.”
Amandine
Originally from France, Amandine and her family are moving to Wellington to start a new adventure. And she’s excited about the challenge.
“There’s a range of people who can help me. There’s even someone who can look at my assignments and help with my grammar. These kinds of services don’t exist in a French university. I feel super supported every day, even in the weekend.”
Rebecca
Working and studying full-time isn’t easy. But studying online and on-campus makes it all possible for Rebecca. She’s also loving the smaller class sizes, something that removes the intimidation factor.
“It’s more intimate and you feel safe to ask questions. I know some universities have a thousand students in the lecture theatre. But who’s asking questions with that many people around you?”
