Teaching, exams and assessments , Te mahi whakaako, whakamātautau me ngā aromatawai o te wā KOWHEORI-19

Our blended teaching and learning approach means we can respond quickly to changes in the government’s COVID-19 guidance.

Exams, assessments and impaired performance

We expect disruption to ‘normal’ operations to continue across Semester 2 and potentially into Summer School as a result of winter illnesses and ongoing ‘waves’ of COVID-19.

Because of this, the university has made the following decisions:

Examinations and Assessments

Examinations

Exams will continue to be delivered online.

Find out more about online exams

Assessments

Assessments will be set as outlined on your course web page.

If you miss assessments, you may apply for aegrotat. The College may also allow you to take replacement assessments or reopen fixed time and place assessments.

The following remain as standard:

  • minimum grades for specific assessments outlined in your course specifications
  • All compulsory assessments (i.e., undertaking a specific assessment)
  • Any other completion rules (i.e., specified conditions that must be completed)

In all cases, your attendance grade will be adjusted unless your attendance is subject to regulatory, professional body or external obligations.

Extensions

If you are a non-research student, you may be given an extension:

  • Short – up to 10 additional working days will be automatically approved on request.
  • Medium – completed by the initial grade publication date. Approved as appropriate to circumstance.
  • Long – within 4 months of the initial course publication date. May be granted by the College DTL or equivalent as appropriate to circumstance.

If you are a non-PhD research student, the standard procedures and expectations for extension applications apply.

Aegrotat and impaired performance

Emergency rules apply to aegrotat and impaired performance.

Evidence may or may not be required depending upon your circumstances but it may be beneficial to your application to supply supporting evidence.

Apply for aegrotat or impaired performance consideration

Not Finished (NF)s and Pre-requisites

If you cannot enrol in a course because you have a published NF on a pre-requisite course, you may apply for special permission to enrol in the course.

If you pass the higher course and fail the lower course, your credits will be unaffected, but you will need to complete the failed course (or equivalent).

Inability to complete planned teaching / learning

Due to disruptions by COVID-19, you may be unable to complete some core teaching and learning activities within 15 working days of the published end date for your course.

In this case, the end date for all impacted course offerings will be extended and you will be able complete the course requirements in the following semester.

If you are unable to continue under these circumstances, and can demonstrate that your circumstances make continuing impossible, you will be given a without penalty refund.

Do you feel your study has been impacted by COVID-19?

If you have been impacted by COVID-19 and are struggling with your study, we encourage you to consider the various academic supports such as study extensions which may allow you to continue your study. If you are considering withdrawing from your course or courses:

  • This may impact your StudyLink funding (eg StudyLink allowance)
  • There may be issues related to academic progress and time to programme completion rules

If you have considered the above and explored all of your options and would like to proceed with withdrawing from some (or all) of your study, please go to the student portal. If you feel that your situation would be considered to be exceptional circumstances, you may consider applying for a Fee Appeal. Please go to 'Fees and finance' section to 'Apply for fee appeal'.

Consideration of your fee appeal will be on the basis of:

  1. Your personal situation
  2. Whether it would be considered to be unforeseen
  3. Your statement within the Fee Appeal form
  4. Information which supports your position

Appeals will be processed within 4-6 weeks. An approved fee appeal will mean a credit of your tuition fees for the course(s) you withdraw from.

This credit is returned in the same way in which it was paid (eg to third parties such as StudyLink/Fees Free/Sponsor, if relevant). If you personally paid your fees, then the credit will sit in your Massey Student Account and will be available to use for future study or you may request a refund by emailing ARStudents@massey.ac.nz.

Distance students

Online delivery of your courses should continue largely unaffected if all goes as planned. However adjustments may be required if COVID-19 strongly impacts university staffing. If you need support, please contact the university.
