A celebration of community and competition at 2024 Home Sports Day

Monday 10 June 2024

Over 500 people gathered for the annual Home Sports Day event held in Manawatū, celebrating the dedicated community involved in the sports clubs and games hosted on the campus throughout the year.

Massey’s Home Sports Day saw a large turnout of students, club members, opposing teams and spectators. The event featured four rugby games and two football games, showcasing fierce yet fun competition on the field.

In rugby, Varsity A’s narrowly defeated Te Kawau 31 to 28, the Vets triumphed over Bulls 45 to five, Freyberg Old Boys overcame the Rams and Te Kawau Colts emerged victorious against the Colts. In football, the Massey Rigs drew with Dannevirke in a three to three match, while the Legends beat Whanganui Marist with an eight to three win.

This year, nine clubs participated, offering a series of ‘have a go’ sessions in the Sports Hall. These fun, interactive games allowed attendees to try sports they hadn’t experienced before. Clubs involved included futsal, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, grappling, squash and badminton.

Recreation Centre Manager Ron Werner says it was a great day for students to engage with their sports clubs and support other clubs on campus.

“There was a fantastic energy of support and pride for Massey, and it was great to see so many people out and about on a Saturday. A special shoutout to the rugby and pickleball clubs, who gave a lot of support leading up to and during the event!”

Thanks to the support of the Club Fund through Te Tira Ahu Pae, catering was available throughout the day, including a sausage sizzle on the fields, where university mascot Fergus stepped in to help.

On behalf of the rugby club, Associate Professor Matt Barnes says the supporters and players appreciated the meals and opportunities provided by the day.

“The success of the after-match function proves this space can add value to the social environment on campus for years to come.”
