Monday 22 July 2024

London-based artist, writer and Associate Professor of photography Anthony Luvera is the guest lecturer for this year’s Peter Turner Memorial Lecture on 8 August.

Documentation of the making of Assisted Self-Portrait of Sahai Dejonge from Construct (2018 – 2022) by Anthony Luvera.

The annual event, organised by Whiti o Rehua School of Art in partnership with Te Papa Tongarewa and sponsored by Splendid Photo, is a much anticipated and well-attended event for the photography community of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Anthony Luvera is a socially engaged artist, writer and educator based in London. The long-term collaborative work he creates with individuals and communities has been exhibited internationally in galleries, public spaces and festivals, and his writing regularly appears in a range of publications. He is an Associate Professor of photography in the Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities at Coventry University in the United Kingdom, and editor or For Whom?, a periodical about socially engaged photography.

Mr Luvera works with people who are marginalised, overly spoken for and misrepresented. His practice is built on dialogue, trust, participation and co-creation. Through long-term collaborative projects, often embedded within the support services of health and social care organisations, his work addresses issues such as homelessness, housing justice and queer representation.

For the 2024 Peter Turner Memorial Lecture, Mr Luvera will present a survey of past and recent projects, sharing his observations on some of the critical questions and creative strategies he uses in his practice, reflecting on working with photography, collaboration and social action.

Event organiser Senior Lecturer Caroline McQuarrie says, “Anthony Luvera’s socially engaged practice will be of interest to a wide audience. Spanning art, photography, design and publishing, the way he establishes, manages and then disseminates projects about culturally important topics is highly skilled. The lecture affords a rare opportunity to hear him share his methods and motivations.”

About the Peter Turner Memorial Lecture

The Peter Turner Memorial Lecture was established in memory of the late Peter Turner who was a photographic historian, curator, author, editor, publisher and teacher.

He championed photography as an art form and contributed to public knowledge and understanding of the medium through public lectures and exhibitions of contemporary New Zealand photography.

Associated with the memorial lecture is a master’s scholarship in his name in documentary photography. One scholarship is awarded each year to an exceptional candidate wishing to advance their photographic work through a period of postgraduate study.

The scholarship and memorial lecture series were launched in 2008 and are supported by a Massey University Foundation funds appeal.
