Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global Engagement Stuart Morriss delivered a keynote speech at the Global Forum for Leaders of Agricultural Science and Technology in Chengdu, China earlier this month.
The forum, organised by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, gathered agricultural science and technology leaders from around the world to discuss major issues for the development of global agricultural science and technology.
In his speech, Facilitating Innovative Farm Systems and Capability in Agribusiness towards Sustainable Agricultural Development, Mr Morriss highlighted projects Massey is leading in the sustainable development of agriculture and rural communities. These included the East Indonesia Innovative Farm Systems and Capability in Agribusiness Activity project - a collaboration between Massey University, led by Professor Chris Anderson, and the University of Mataram in Indonesia. This project is supported by the New Zealand Aid Programme and is designed to help Indonesian farmers build capability to realise long-term sustainability goals.
The forum was attended by almost 400 agricultural science and technology leaders including a number of Massey’s strategic partners including Wageningen University and Research Chairman Arthur Mol, representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization, United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank, Plant and Food chief executive officer David Hughes, AgResearch assistant research director Jolon Dyer.
Mr Morriss also held a bilateral meeting with Vice-President Sun Tan to discuss future cooperation between Massey and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
