Immigrant scholar to world’s top scientist

School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing Professor Henry Chung has been ranked in the world's top two per cent of scientists, in a list compiled by Stanford University.

Professor Chung was one of 77 Massey Scientists that were listed in Stanford’s World’s Top 2% Scientists 2023. Professor Chung’s ranking sits at 93,222 in the general category and 521 within marketing. This ranking is widely used by universities around the globe as a measure of their research excellence.

Professor Chung is an immigrant scholar from Taiwan. He grew up in a small town in Southern Taiwan, Kaohsiung where his parents were tobacco and banana farmers who had little education. Despite his modest background, he went on to complete a Bachelor of Business Studies from National Taiwan University of Technology and Science, a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University, and a PhD from The University of Waikato. He was the first person from his hometown to receive a PhD.

He speaks four languages - Hakka, Taiwanese, Mandarin Chinese and English. His unique portfolio enables him to be a specialist on immigrant and related research. Today, his research on immigrant managers and enterprises is widely cited by scholars around the world.

Professor Chung has extensively researched in areas such as international marketing strategies, managerial ties/relationship marketing and technology and marketing. In total, Professor Chung has published more than 45 refereed papers in high impact journals and received more than 2,700 and 1,035 citations on Google Scholar and Scopus respectively.

He has featured in issues of Industrial Marketing Management, the Journal of Asia Business Studies and the Asia Pacific Journal of Marketing and Logistics and is an associate editor of the South Asia Journal of Global Business Research. He sits on the editorial boards of a number of journals, including the Asian Journal of Business Research, Cross Cultural and Strategic Management, European Journal of Marketing, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Contemporary Marketing Science and Journal of Research in Interactive Marketing. He is the current vice chair of the Academy of International Business Asia Pacific Chapter.
