Dozens of Massey students will have the opportunity to deepen connections with Asia and Latin America after Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) awarded the university five group programmes for the Prime Minister’s Scholarships.

The recent funding round for the PM's Scholarships mean Massey students will have the opportunity to travel to Asia and Latin America over the next year, just as this group of students travelled to Colombia in 2019.

Just over $600,000 has been granted for up to 61 students to embark on a range of programmes in Asia and Latin America, including an Agriculture and Sustainability Internship Programme in Mexico City and a two-month Fashion Internship Programme in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

“The reopening of New Zealand borders brings renewed opportunities for travel as Kiwis reconnect with the world,” Executive Director of Global Engagement Christopher Carey says.

“The group programmes Massey offers as part of the Prime Ministers Scholarship provide the opportunity to change the lives of Kiwis. These scholarships mean talented New Zealanders will be able to build new connections and networks, develop a deeper understanding of language and culture, and add an international perspective to their learning.”

The five group programmes awarded to Massey are:

  • Prime Minister’s Scholarship to Asia:
    -
Fashion & Textile eight-week internship in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, led by CRCC Asia
    - Digital Media Internship Programme, an eight-week internship in Seoul, South Korea, also led by CRCC Asia
    - Six-week language, culture and business experiences at Peking University and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China
  • Prime Minister’s Scholarship to Latin America:
    -
Seven-week Agriculture & Environmental Sustainability Internship in Mexico City led by Pogoda Project
    - Performance Arts Cultural and Language Exchange to Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia

The Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America are funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by ENZ. Since 2013, the scholarships have supported more than 2,400 New Zealanders on life-changing learning experiences in Asia and Latin America. The opening of this first scholarship round since the COVID-19 pandemic began was announced recently by Education Minister Chris Hipkins.

All groups will embark on their travel within the next 12 months.
