More than 250 students received a warm welcome as they began studying with Massey at one of the four dedicated Learning Centres in China this semester.
While the opening of international borders will allow international students to return to study in New Zealand from the beginning of 2023, the Massey Learning Centres (MLCs) give students the option of participating in online classes by Massey’s top academics while joining classmates on campus at one of China’s outstanding universities. Students can start online in Semester 2 2022 and then travel to New Zealand in 2023.
Massey’s General Manager of Global Partnerships, Rob Stevens says, “By having groups of students in similar subjects grouped together on campus, they receive support from Massey learning advisors, while still being able to enjoy the full benefits of an on-campus experience.”
To ensure students felt like they were part of Massey while based in China, the marketing team produced campus branding which was designed from New Zealand and produced in China.
“Students also received a Massey Learning Centre welcome pack which was produced as part of our manaakitanga approach to bring together all the Massey students visually and make them feel special,” Mr Stevens says.
When students arrived at each of the Massey Learning Centres, they received a Welcome Pack, including a letter of welcome, a Massey t-shirt, and a Massey notebook and pen in a reusable branded cardboard box. Students were also given an online orientation and introduction with their lecturers, as well as dedicated tutorial support in China including non-academic support services such as assistance with any IT issues.
Beyond their studies, Massey also provided for offsite extramural activities such as city tours, social occasions including offsite dinners for Massey Learning Centre students and sporting activities such as Massey Learning Centre basketball teams who compete against the Chinese University teams.
The warm welcome has been appreciated by students.
“I am really grateful to Massey University for creating such a great learning opportunity for me,” says Wei Huang, who is studying at MLC Hainan University.
“Before I came to the Massey Learning Centre at Hainan University, I didn't know I had such great potential. What makes me even more delighted is the teachers at Hainan University attached great importance to our arrival which made me feel proud to be a Massey University student.”
Massey has four MLC’s in China including Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT), Canvard College, Beijing Technology and Business University (Canvard College, BTBU), Hainan University and Nanjing University of Finance and Economics (NUFE). Students can study a range of programmes, including business, finance, Foundation certificate, communication, aviation management and much more.
