Funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Manapou ki te Ao Education New Zealand, the scholarships enable the exchange of language, culture, skills and opportunities for Aotearoa New Zealand students in Asia and Latin America.
Executive Director of Global Engagement Chris Carey says these scholarships help enable our students to embark on a global experience and make an impact outside New Zealand.
“Massey is committed to preparing a new generation of global leaders. To do so we need to be able to provide our students with exposure to international perspectives and offer first-hand experience of other cultures. By offering scholarships that enable our students to go out into the world and experience such fantastic opportunities, we are delivering on our commitment to develop leaders of the future.”
The successful programmes include a four-week exchange to Colombia, providing 10 students with the opportunity to study Spanish. Run by the School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication, the programme will address climate change through the lens of theatre as an intercultural communication mechanism.
It is the second time the programme, co-organised with the Universidad de Los Andes, has been funded following the success of last year’s programme. Another programme includes a one month arts study tour in Mexico for eight students from Whiti o Rehua School of Art.
More than $200,000 has also been awarded to support Massey’s 'Sustainability and Society in Bangkok' programme. This nine-week internship explores key issues in environment and social sustainability and prioritises participation of Māori and Pacific young professionals.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori Professor Meihana Durie, Rangitāne, Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Raukawa Te Au ki Te Tonga, Ngāti Porou, Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tahu, says the awards provide an outstanding opportunity for our Māori and Pacific ākonga (students) to gain invaluable learning experiences abroad alongside other students, that focus on critical environmental and social priorities affecting us all.
“Importantly, the internship will also enable participants to share some distinctive elements of our indigenous culture and language here in Aotearoa that are also reflective of Te Ao Māori perspectives that inform environmental and social responses and solutions.”
Applications for Massey’s Prime Minister’s Scholarship-funded group programmes will open from mid July and all groups will travel within 12 months.
