Massey hosts Sustainability Development Goals summit

Massey University recently held a summit titled 'How to achieve the SDGs? Let’s ask Nature', uniting sustainability advocates from government ministries, NGOs like Volunteer Service Abroad, Enviroschools and the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, along with representatives from other universities. The event is a precursor to the major Aotearoa National Sustainable Development Goals Summit scheduled for 2025, which Massey will host on its Manawatū campus.

In 2022, Massey hosted the Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS) conference on The Future of Sustainability.

Sustainability champions from campus communities across Australasia and the Pacific shared and inspired transformative actions towards a future that is fair, just and equitable for all.

Global One Health Research Partnership programme

In 2023, Massey hosted a 4-day Global One Health Research Partnership programme, which brought together Massey’s One Health researchers, international partners, government scientists and the New Zealand One Health research community. One Health aims to improve health outcomes by recognising, understanding and managing the relationships between people, animals and their shared environment.

KIWI Challenge partnership

Massey partnered with Education New Zealand on the KIWI Challenge Competition, an annual entrepreneurship competition for Indonesian students. In 2022, Sustainable Business and Entrepreneurship in the Tourism Industry was the challenging theme.

Good Impressions charity initiative

In 2023, through the Good Impressions charity initiative, Massey actively donated advertising value to digital billboards for organisations advocating social change across New Zealand. Beneficiaries included I Am Hope, Forest and Bird, Māori Women’s Development Inc and Sustainable Coastlines.

Virtual SDG programme

As part of Massey’s Global Citizen programme, some students undertook a Virtual SDG programme to learn more about the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants worked in global teams and worked on an SDG Challenge Project.

The university was part of the team that won the 2022 challenge. The prize included a certificate for trees, which will be planted in Nepal by Eden Reforestation projects.

International symposium on global nutrition

The world’s leading experts on protein, including several New Zealand scientists, met in Utrecht in September 2023 to discuss ways to address the nutritional needs of a burgeoning world population. The International Symposium: Dietary Protein for Human Health was co-organised by Massey’s Riddet Institute, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Wageningen University, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
