Margaret Tennant was formerly Professor of History at Massey University, and is now an Honorary Research Professor within the School of Humanities, also holding Emeritus status at Massey University.

Emeritus Professor Tennant has particular expertise in the history of social policy and the history of the non-profit sector. She is the author of four sole-authored books, including The Fabric of Welfare: Voluntary Organisations, Government, and Welfare in New Zealand 1840-2005 (2007), Across the Street, Across the World. A History of the Red Cross in New Zealand 1915-2015 (2015) and co-editor of five books covering women's history and the history of social policy. In addition she has published more than 60 refereed articles, book chapters scholarly entries and reports, in addition to chapters in conference proceedings and unrefereed publications. She is currently working with a team producing a new history of Palmerston North and is involved in a number of heritage organisations, as well as being on the national committee of the Professional Historians’ Association of New Zealand. Professor Tennant was formerly Dean of Massey University's Graduate Research School, Chair of its Academic Board and a Director of Research for Humanities. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and recently served on its Academy Executive and Council for six years.
