Miss Tse investigated differences between three ways of teaching: phonics instruction, big book shared reading, and a combination of the two. Her research provided evidence that a combination approach, in which phonics instruction was directly applied to words in the big books used for shared reading, was the most effective and that teaching phonemic awareness helped children to read unfamiliar words.
