The Cube is an apartment-style self-catered hall of residence in Wellington, perfect for students aged 18 to 30 seeking a more independent living environment within a vibrant student community.

All our accommodation options are furnished and intended for single occupancy. We are unable to accommodate couples or families.

You will need to bring some personal items

To help you settle in, create a homely environment and make your stay as comfortable as possible, you should bring:

  • bedding and towels – bring your own or purchase a bedding pack when you accept your offer
  • clothes hangers for your wardrobe
  • personal hygiene items
  • laundry basket and powder
  • cleaning products to keep your space tidy
  • electric fan – heaters are provided but you may need a fan in summer.

Occupancy dates

If you are studying the full year at Massey, you must apply for the full year accommodation term. If you are studying for a single semester only, apply for a semester-only accommodation term.

Make sure your application matches the duration of your study programme to secure the appropriate accommodation term.

Release of contract

All our contracts are fixed term, which means you are required to pay all fees for the duration of the contract.

We understand that circumstances can change, and we're here to support you through our release of contract process if needed.

Eligibility for release

You may be eligible for release from your accommodation contract if you are withdrawing:

  • before the official application withdrawal dates:
    • returning halls residents withdrawing before 1 December 2024
    • new halls residents withdrawing before 23 January 2025.
  • from your studies at Massey University altogether.
  • for compassionate reasons. Applications will be reviewed on a case by case basis and will require supporting evidence.

How to apply for release of contract

  1. If you are applying before our withdrawal dates, complete the Release of Contract application form.
    2024 Release of Contract Application - Wellington
    The 2025 Release of Contract Application will be available from 1 October 2024.
  2. If you are applying after our withdrawal dates, then you will need to discuss your circumstances with a the Residential Life Manager/Assistant Manager.
  3. Submit your completed Release of Contract application form and any supporting documents by email to
    accommodation.wellington@massey.ac.nz.
  4. Your application will be reviewed by our Release of Contract Panel, who will make a decision within 7 working days.
  5. Once a decision has been reached, you will be contacted via email to inform you of the outcome.
  6. If your application is approved, all penalty fees will be calculated from the date we received it.

Payment options

We offer payment options to make managing your accommodation fees as convenient as possible:

  • Full payment pre-payment – you can choose to pre-pay for your accommodation by semester or for the entire year.
  • Semester payment – you can choose to pay in two instalments for your accommodation prior to each semester
  • Weekly payments – our domestic students have the option to pay on a weekly basis via direct debit.

These options are designed to fit different financial needs and preferences, for a smooth and hassle-free payment process.

Wellington halls communal and social spaces

You’ll find plenty of places to relax and socialise at Wellington halls.

The Cube has a shared common room with TV and couches, located on the ground floor, while Kāinga Rua’s beautiful central courtyard is a hub for outdoor entertainment. Join us for an outdoor movie night or games on the lawn!

Laundry facilities

Both the Cube and Kāinga Rua have dedicated laundry facilities, accessible 24/7 at $3 per load. Please bring your own washing powder.

Tussock café

Eat in, grab a takeaway, or simply meet up with your friends and chill out at our central campus bar and café. Tussock café is located on the ground floor of Block 5, just a short walk from the library, right at the heart of Wellington campus!

Your responsibilities

Cleaning

Maintaining a clean and comfortable living environment is a shared responsibility. Here’s what you need to know about cleaning.
  • Communal spaces – we take care of cleaning the communal areas
  • Personal rooms – you are responsible for cleaning your own room or apartment
  • After use – you must tidy up after yourself in communal spaces to ensure they remain clean and enjoyable for everyone.

Alcohol

You can drink in moderation during permitted times, but you cannot drink in your bedroom. Some types of alcohol are not allowed.

To foster a safe and respectful living environment, we have established the following guidelines regarding alcohol consumption. These policies are in place to promote responsible drinking behavior and ensure the well-being of all residents. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines.

Where and when you are allowed to drink alcohol

  • The Cube allows moderate drinking in the apartment common areas only, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during permitted hours.
  • Kāinga Rua allows moderate drinking in the common lounge areas only, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during permitted hours.

Prohibited locations

To maintain a tranquil and orderly living space, drinking in bedrooms is not permitted.

Restricted alcohol types

Spirits and hard liquors are not permitted, as well as alcohol in large quantities such as beer kegs.

Access control

Access is restricted by swipe cards, key access and secure room locks.
  • Swipe card or key access – all accommodation facilities are equipped with swipe card or key access, ensuring only authorised individuals can enter.
  • Secure room locks – each room is equipped with a secure lock, providing privacy and peace of mind for residents.

Security

  • 24/7 availability – campus security is available round the clock, seven days a week, providing assistance and oversight whenever needed.

Emergency response

In the event of any emergency, our security team is trained and equipped to respond promptly and effectively.

In addition to our trained security team, a member of the residential life team is on call at all times to assist with emergencies.

Parking and transport

Car parking

If you want to bring your car to university with you, car parking is available for $30 per week. There are a limited number of parking spaces at Kāinga Rua hall, so apply early. Priority will be given to those that need a car for study.

You can request a car park when you confirm your Offer of Place. Be sure to indicate your preference during the offer process.

Bicycle storage

We support sustainable transportation options like cycling and encourage our residents to embrace eco-friendly transportation options. A dedicated bicycle shed is available for you to securely park your bike.

Additionally, there are several bicycle racks conveniently located around the Wellington campus for easy access.

No indoor storage

For safety and cleanliness reasons, bicycles are not permitted inside the accommodation. Please use the provided bicycle rack or campus racks for storage.

Public transport

Buy a Snapper to get cheaper bus and cable car fares. And if you’re a full-time student, you can get discounted peak-time travel with your Snapper. Top up your Snapper on campus. Make sure you always have enough credit by using the Snapper top-up machine in Pyramid Block 5.
